about

(Leon Rosselson. arr. Horgan/Griffin)
This is a song about the Digger Commune of 1649. A group, known as "the diggers", made an attempt to farm on common land in Surrey, England, at a time when food prices were at an all-time high. They received harassment from the Lord of the Manor in the form of beatings and arson attacks. They eventually abandoned St. Georges Hill in August of 1649.
